Boiler Systems & Boiler Installers
The below should act as a guide between the different systems available:
Condensing vs Non-Condensing
Non-condensing boilers are only able to extract between 50-80% of heat from fuel compared to 90-92% from condensing boilers
Condensing boilers are sealed systems and much more efficient as they can extract heat from flue gases which is lost by a non-condensing boiler.
Internal vs External
The majority of boilers are installed inside the home but some fuel types such as oil require connection to an external storage tank and so the boiler is typically also installed outside.
The type of boiler your property will require depends on size, age, and your personal lifestyle:
Conventional
Fed by two tanks located in the loft, one for cold-water drawn from the mains supply and the other as a feed and expansion tank to supply the boiler system, the boiler will heat the water which is stored in a hot-water cylinder until needed.
- Advantages – Multiple taps can be used at once due to the high volume of water stored
- Disadvantages – Requires both a loft and airing cupboard space and instant hot-water will not be available once used up as the cylinder will need to refill
System
Works in the same way as a conventional boiler apart from the need for a second expansion tank as this technology is built into the boiler.
- Advantages – Multiple taps can be used at once due to the high volume of water stored and a stronger water pressure is delivered
- Disadvantages – Requires both a loft and airing cupboard space and instant hot-water will not be available once used up as the cylinder will need to refill
Combi
Water is heated directly from the mains so no hot-water cylinder or cold-water storage tank is required.
- Advantages – Energy efficient and compact, easy to install, and unlimited hot-water is available on demand
- Disadvantages – Requires an adequate mains flow rate, only one hot-water outlet can be used at a time, and there is no back-up source of hot-water in case of fault
